Valentine’s Day has us all contemplating matters of the heart. Anyone thinking about heart health? Well make yourself a cup of tea and consider this: drinking tea has been correlated to health benefits such as reduction in clogged arteries, reduced death rates from heart disease, and lowered cholesterol levels. That’s right, tea is great for your heart!
The main players in supporting these actions are a group of anti-oxidants known as Flavanoids. More specifically, the ECGC group of flavanoids are found in high concentrations in tea. Green tea has been found to contain the highest ECGC concentrations, and Matcha green tea takes top prize with 137 times the ECGC concentration of other teas! However, because of the common origin of all classic teas in the leaves of Camellia sinensis, all teas have some degree of heart healthy constituents. White tea helps thin the blood and improve artery function, thereby lowering blood pressure and benefitting the entire circulatory system. Black tea, while lower in ECGC flavonoid compounds, does contain significant amounts of theophylline which increases blood flow and helps maintain normal blood pressure, and has been found to lower cholesterol.
The list of great reasons to drink tea just keeps on growing! And don’t forget the simple benefits of tea drinking that include connecting with friends and loved ones, or simply taking a moment out of the day for yourself! So drink tea, stay healthy and be happy!
